Can you actually do a Word Wall with two, three, four and five years old children in Bible class and they enjoy it? Absolutely!!! This activity works with their age but also with your elementary students.
What to Do?
You can find on the web, great word wall cards and templates already prepared for many of the Bible lessons you plan to do with children. For example, www.dltk-kids.com has some nice templates that are already prepared for your use. Teacherspayteachers is another resource you may utilize for little or no cost. But what if you have a lesson and you cannot find already prepared word wall cards. What can you do? Anyway, little children need the word and a picture on their word wall cards. That can be harder to find.
Instructions
First, you need to identify two or three words that are important to your Bible story or event. For example, in the Bible story of Jesus calms the storm found in Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, Luke 8:22-25, you might identify boat, storm and calm as words you want to share with the class. You would place these inside the text box frame in the file below and then insert an image from www.freebibleimages.com or your clipart gallery. To copy an image over use your snip it tool if using Microsoft making it easier for you to decrease the size of the picture to fit in the frame. Print these and then I would then suggest laminating your word cards for later use.
Next, you can purchase Word Wall Banners at your discount variety store for $1 or $1.25. For less than $20 you may find these charts at teacher supply stores. If these are unavailable, cut page protectors in strips wide enough to hold the cards. Lay these strips out on poster board with space between leaving the top edges open. Lightly tape down the sides and then run packing tape down the sides and the bottom edges.
Finally, make sure you purchase or make a pointer. Pointers can be purchased from teacher supply stores or Amazon. If you are unable to do so, they are easy to make. Trace yours or someone else’s hand with a pointing finger. Cut the drawing out and laminate. Tape the pointed hand to the top of an unsharpened pencil. You now have a pointer.
The Activity
For the activity, the children are called up one at a time by saying, “Teacher Kyle” (or whatever the child’s name is) can you come up and find the word that has the picture of the water not moving? The water is calm.” Give Teacher Kyle the pointer and encourage him to find the word card Once he does, praise him for his hard work. He is then to give the pointer to a classmate for their turn. Continue until all have had a turn. This activity works well for introducing a a new lesson with new material and new words as well as reviewing old material and keeping it on the mind of your children.
