Child-Made Floral Bouquet for Mothers

Introduction

Many of the Bible stories feature mothers and we have holidays that we like to show appreciation to our mothers. This craft is a simple way for children to create an arrangement for their mom's or significant females.

Preparation

Prior to doing the activity, purchase the following materials:

a. Small lightweight plastic peat pots. You can get 6 for $1.25 at a discount store or buy in bulk.

b. Green Styrofoam pot inserts. Usually a block will fill 2 or 3 pots and must be cut with a knife to fit in the pot. Half round balls will only fill 2 pots. Prior to class, fit the green Styrofoam into the peat pots.

c. Fake Silk Flowers. You will need to buy large bunches of these. I would suggest bunches that have many flowers on each stem. Cut these off at the main stem and push the leaves up to the flower head. This will make the bouquet prettier. You will need wire cutters for cutting the flowers apart. Using a pair of scissors or shears will tear up the shears but also hurt you. Get colorful bushes of flowers but also get bushes of greenery.

The Activity

After presenting a lesson about a Bible mother, you can let your child or children create their own bouquet to give to their Mom or special female in their life. Talk about who they plan to give their bouquet and why.

Give each child the prepared peat pot. Let them select the stems of flowers they choose to use. They will stick the flowers in the pot with putting the wire into the Styrofoam. They will put the number of flowers into the Styrofoam as you have or as you choose. You want it to look filled in or full. Make sure the child distributes the flowers throughout the pot as if too much weight is on one side the pot will not stand up.

It is a joyful event to watch each child present their child-made flower bouquet to their Mom. You can make it even more special by letting the children decorate a card to give as well.
