Memory Verse Games for Littles

Learning memory verses is a great skill for disciples of all ages! It makes your think about God’s Word more often and you will be able to recall verses in times of need just like Jesus did when Satan tempted Him (Matthew 4). For a little one, memorizing a verse can be a great confidence boost for them as they learn that they are capable of doing hard things.

Below are some fun ways to learn memories verses for little seeds. These are especially useful for 18M-3Y kids, but can be fun for older ages too.

  1. Use an echo microphone to let your child say the verse. They will love the silly sound that it makes and will want to repeat the verse over and over.
  2. Write the words of the verse out and put them on the wall. Then use a fly swatter to go swat each word as you say it. Let the child join in the fun in swatting and saying the verse. This is a great way to get up and move with the verse.
  3. An easy activity is to write your memory verse on two different colors of Post it Notes. For example: If the memory words are “Follow Me” from Mark 1:17, write “follow” on one color of Post it Notes and “me” on the other color. Write enough of each Post it Notes so that each child, can find one of each word. You will hang these throughout the classroom and when you do memory work time the children will each collect one of each color. The children will then help you put the words together to make the memory verse “Follow Me” by sticking these down in front of them or sticking “Follow” on their left hand and “Me” on their right. Practice saying the words together. Each child will then be asked to say the words to you and then find another helper to say the memory words. Afterwards, ask the children to stick the words back around the room.
  4. Hang copies of your memory verse with a picture that goes along with it around the classroom. You can use clip art or pictures from the internet to add an image to your memory verse. For example, the memory verse “I will be with you” from Exodus 3:12, may have a picture of a burning bush since God spoke to Moses from a burning bush. Give your little seeds a flashlight and ask them to shine the light on as many memory verses as they can find. They will enjoy the hunt and when they finish you can review the important words by shining your light on them.
  5. A fun and easy way to remember the memory verse is to put it to a tune. The memory verse “Follow Me” might be sung as follows: “Follow Me” Tune: “London Bridge” “Follow Me” Jesus said, Jesus said, Jesus said. “Follow Me” Jesus said. “Be fishers of men.” Say: Mark 1:17 by MZ
