Introduction:
Many search for Jesus every day but this little activity helps Little Ones feel accomplishment as they find the “Baby Jesus” easily. It also aids in their comprehension that Jesus once was a Baby and that many sought Him either to worship Him or to do harm. (Matthew and Luke- chapters 2):
Preparation of Materials:
The preparation for this Baby Jesus activity is easy. I created individual sensory boxes for each child by purchasing small, square storage containers. I then filled these halfway with rice. You could also use shredded paper or sand as your filler. I had old rice so this is what I used. I then purchased small baby figures from Amazon and children’s tongs in the education section of the local Dollar Tree or they can be found on Amazon. Place four babies in the container and cover with your filler. Place container lid on top to keep materials inside.
When we do the activity, we place plastic trays under the containers as this helps with clean up. These trays are very versatile and we use these almost every class period. This great investment is found at Oriental Trading. Note: While the price at this website is a little more, each arrives in great condition and none are broken or cracked as they might be when purchased from another site.
Activity:
To do this activity, first show children how it is done. Tell the children they are going to look for Baby Jesus just like the shepherds looked for Him. Show children the individual sensory containers. Explain they are to use their fingers or the tongs and remove as many babies they can find and place them on their tray. Count out loud the number of babies you find. Give each child a tray. Give the children time to hunt for their babies. As they work, you can sing the song below. Afterwards, count the babies and stress that God had only one Son, Jesus.
